Across Central MN, Big Brothers Big Sisters is experiencing a critical need for men to volunteer. Nearly 70% of the chldren on our waiting list are boys, yet only 1 out of 5 new volunteers are men. Boys are waiting an average of 304 days before receiving a Big Brother. That’s too long. It’s time to Man up Minnesota!
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central MN is launching Man Up Minnesota to give men a fun & easy opportunity to help strengthen our community by providing boys with long-term, quality mentoring that is proven to help kids who face adversity succeed.
Community-Based Program: Community-Based Bigs spend a couple of hours with their Little, 3-4 times a month, doing activities in the community. A few activities that Community-Based matches enjoy are: going to movies, grabbing a bite to eat, and going to the park.
School-Based Program: School-Based Bigs spend about one hour per week with their Littles at the child's school. School-Based Bigs stay in contact with their Littles via phone or mail over the summer months. A few activities that School-Based matches enjoy are: playing board games, arts & crafts, and playing on the school playground. School districts currently served include: Big Lake, Foley, Sartell, Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud.
Site-Based Program: Site-Based Bigs spend about one hour per week with their Little at a Boys & Girls Club. A few activities that Site-Based matches enjoy are: playing board games, arts & crafts, and playing sports.
*All volunteers are required to commit for a minimum of 1 year
Would you make a good Big?
The ideal candidate for a Big would be someone who is stable, responsible, mature, and patient with a good sense of humor.
Being a Big is about being a dependable friend and positive role model. A quality mentoring friendship naturally helps to develop the child’s character and capabilities.
What does a Big do?
Each match is unique. Getting together doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activity—just a few hours every month doing things you already enjoy. You'll be paired with a child who has similar interests & hobbies.
How much time does being a Big require?
Bigs meet with their Littles 3-4 times a month for a minimum of one year.
